limiting strace?

Simple: don't output the trace to a file.  The "by default" up there means
that if you don't supply the "-o" option, strace will send the trace to
stdout.

Umm, how about something like the line below?

strace unzip whatever | tail -1000000 > strace.out 2>&1 &

No wizardry involved here.
