coredumps with 20040701 snapsnot

I tried building a perl using the most recent snapshot and got lots of
coredumps during make test, especially in the threads tests.  If this
is not a known problem with the snapshot, let me know and I'll give
more info.   1.5.10-3 doesn't have this problem.
