Ah, ok.

Yes, it works no problem.

Ok, here's a step-by-step guide to produce the bug in
a fresh install of Cygwin (I did this testing
2005-01-12).
1) Download setup.exe from http://www.cygwin.com/
2) Install otherwise defaults but add also gcc, make,
wget
3) Start Cygwin Bash Shell
4) wget
http://www.busybox.net/downloads/busybox-1.00.tar.bz2
5) mkdir
/tmp/a_longish_directory_name_for_testing_exec
6) cd /tmp/a_longish_directory_name_for_testing_exec
7) tar xjf ~/busybox-1.00.tar.bz2
8) cd busybox-1.00
9) make oldconfig (hit return for the question)
10) make dep - see it fail with "cannot exec..."
11) cd ..
12) mv busybox-1.00 ~/
13) cd ~/busybox-1.00
14) make dep - set it work!
Before in my own config I had environment variables
set so with it a bit shorter path name was sufficient.
However, with the default install/settings the above
path is required.
cygcheck -s -v -r output is attached.
