gdb: "run >z" does not work

on linux:
$ gdb foo
(gdb) run > z
runs foo with stdout redirected to file z.
on cygwin, "run > z" passes ">" and "z" as command line arguments to
"foo.exe".
is this a known bug?
thanks!
