perl script dies with The instruction at "0x28089a3d" referenced memory at "0x0000004". The memory could not be "written".

I am having problems with a perl script. For no apparent reason I get 
The instruction at "0x28089a3d" referenced memory at "0x0000004". The memory
could not be "written".

I used to have Activestate and then installed cygwin. Can I maybe  de-install
cygwin's perl(if so, how) or is that not the problem?

The only thing I really need from cygwin for this is acces to grace (which in
turn needs a X-server)
