top shows emacs using 100% CPU

Under Xwin emacs hangs intermittantly.
When this happens, emacs accepts no input.
"top" shows emacs consuming 100% CPU.
The only recourse I have found to remedy
the situation is to use kill -9 [emacspid].

The XWin log window repeats many times:
"winTopLevelWindowProc - BitBlt failed: The handle is invalid."
