Help needed: first time tried sshd and got stuck not far from the beginning...

Yes.

Yes, two.

1. Install the 'rebase' package and follow the instructions in its
    README file (under '/usr/share/doc/Cygwin').

2. <http://cygwin.com/acronyms/#BLODA>

Either one of the above is your solution.  You shouldn't need to do both.
(1) is probably easier to try.  However, I'll bet on (2).
