Extra spaces in text files in cygwin

The font your terminal is using.

Are you using rxvt? try setting the font as a parameter.  Which fonts 
are available? depends, I have Cygwin/X installed with all the fonts, 
and some extra, rxvt gets the name of the font it uses from 
/etc/defaults/etc/X11/app-defaults/Rxvt or URxvt.
