fork performance

Hi,

running the following command sequence in bash yields little 
numbers compared to a real unix system:

	while true ; do date ; done | uniq -c

       15 Thu May 15 10:40:22     2008
       16 Thu May 15 10:40:23     2008
       17 Thu May 15 10:40:24     2008
       17 Thu May 15 10:40:25     2008
       17 Thu May 15 10:40:26     2008
       16 Thu May 15 10:40:27     2008
       17 Thu May 15 10:40:28     2008
       16 Thu May 15 10:40:29     2008

Is there a chance to speedup performance?
