latest libstdc++ causing ffmpeg & mplayer to segfault

Not only that, but rebuilding Qt3 from scratch, qmake still segfaults 
(and qmake itself depends only libgcc and libstdc++).  Same goes for the 
SigC testsuite.  So I must suspect a bug in cygwin, libstdc++6, or both.
