1.7.1: probelms with git

Some of the git commands don't seem work.  I able to "init" a git 
repository and check in changes, but commands like "git log" & "git 
diff" are not working.
When I try to run them, they just return to the shell prompt without any 
output.  Has anyone else seen this?
