'screen' does not completely startup

I ran strace in its simplest form.  I attached the output.  Perhaps you
can make since of it.

BTW,  has it something to do with the fact that my 'man' pages show
strange characters?  Just a thought.  I need to get that fixed also, but
have seen a post on the subject recently.  I'll go back and look it over.
