fts_read failed error during Cygwin find, du, etc operations

I inspected it again and there's really no hint at all for a failing
open, stat, read, or readdir in the strace, except the expected ones
when trying to open the message files for output.

Sorry, but from this I really can't even remotely see what the problem
might be.
