inkscape installed but does nothing --- solved to my satisfaction

Inkscape is expecting a running X server to display on.  But even for "-V"?  That 
seems a little presumptuous :-).

I haven't seen this; I'll look into it for later.  Glad inkscape now works for 
your use case.  I appreciate the feedback!
